Synopsis –
Allie: I was supposed to be relaxing. After a messy breakup and years of putting myself last, a girls’ trip to Boston with no kids, no expectations, and a chance to finally see my favourite band in concert was exactly what I needed. But then I crashed my grocery cart in him – Jax Owens, lead singer of the band that’s been on repeat for as long as I can remember. Now I’m panicking, babbling, and trying not to melt into the linoleum while he looks at me as if I’m not just a walking disaster. he’s charming, kind, and way too good to be true. But even if he is interested, I’m not the kind of woman rock stars fall for… Am I?
Jax: I came to Boston for business, not to fall for a gorgeous woman who smells like roses, radiates chaos, and is clearly carrying more than a few suitcases full of baggage. My life has been a mess with a recent divorce, loss, and so much regret that I haven’t felt like myself in a long time. But then Allie shows up and suddenly things feel… possible again. But I live on the road while she’s trying to put down roots. My life, my band, my home—everything is back in Cardiff. We’re only here to finish a deal, go on tour and get back home. But the more time I spend with her, the harder it is to walk away. And now I’m starting to wonder: what if the right thing isn’t in the plan at all?
Thoughts –
When I was asked to ARC read this book by Rattle the Stars PR, I knew straight away that it wasn’t my “usual” read. I’m not a contemporary romance kind of girl. Generally, I gravitate toward tales filled with dragons, swords, and brooding shadow daddies.. However, I also recognised the importance of diversifying my reading palette and challenged myself to explore new genres, so I decided to give it a chance. Plus, I had seen Don’t Think being mentioned on quite a few Bookstagram pages, which piqued my interest a little bit.
I managed to read Don’t Think in less than 12 hours due to it being a relatively short book, which made it a perfect companion for a weekend getaway. You are quickly introduced to all of the characters and their lives, each vividly portrayed against the backdrop of everyday struggles. The characters are relatable in many ways, especially when considering some of their personal difficulties and traumas, which many readers can empathise with in their own lives.
The main characters, Allie and Jax, are both written in a way where they are instantly believable, as they embody the blend of flaws and virtues that make us human. I love that they are both decent people just trying to get through life, wrestling with their dreams and fears while navigating the complexities of their relationships. The fact they meet in the wine aisle made me laugh, along with the playful banter between them regarding their preferences.
The connection between these two characters is almost instant, but it doesn’t feel forced or rushed. It unfolds naturally, allowing the reader to savor each moment of their developing relationship. The romantic aspect manages to feel organic, as it is woven seamlessly into the fabric of the narrative, drawing you into their world of shared glances and subtle gestures. As their bond deepens, you find yourself rooting for them throughout the story, invested in their journey and hopeful for their happiness, as every laugh, every tear, and every shared experience only strengthens the emotional ties that bind them together.
What was really unexpected was the twist at the end of the book! It was so unexpected, but at the same time, I felt it was wholly to be expected considering the character in question. The build up throughout the story hinted at a change, yet it caught me off guard when it finally unfolded. Expect to completely hate a fictional character, because I do! 😂
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. I expected to be bored with there being no fantastical elements, but the relationships between characters, and the few spicy scenes made up for this. I’m looking forward to reading book 2, Louder Than Words, which I am also ARC reading so watch this space!
